Marrakech, the Departure is a first novel filled with memories and sensuality, but also marked by the thoughts of a writer who is mainly known for his essays. Well-renowned psychoanalyst, Daniel Sibony is the author of about thirty works, most of them in the psychoanalytical vein. Like him, his narrator is born in Morocco, in the Medina of Marrakech. And like him, as well, he is a writer. Back to the land of his childhood where he plans to finish a novel, the main character is caught between two inner trips: a love story with a young woman and the outburst of memories, which make him return to the departure point. Brilliantly joining the two narrative streams, Daniel Sibony sinks into a colourful and delicious past filled with beautifully strange words (in Arabic or Hebrew), but also with the feeling that the departure and the finishing lines mysteriously meet and become one.

    No matter where you come from, if you are sensitive to the questions of identity, exile and a new beginning; if you are not too much into nostalgia only, then this book is really for you. It is a great read.
